     Hon. William Cranch was born on 17 July 1769 in Weymouth, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Richard Cranch and Mary Smith.1 Hon. William Cranch married Anna Greenleaf, daughter of Hon. William Greenleaf and Mary Brown, on 6 April 1795.2 Hon. William Cranch died on 1 September 1855 in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of 86.1 He graduated from Harvard in 1787 and was admitted to the bar in 1790. He practised for a time in Braintree and Haverhill, Mass., and removed to Washington, D.C., in 1794, where he was Commissioner of Public Buildings in 1800. In 1801 President Adams appointed him to the bench of the circuit court of the District of Columbia. He was reporter of decisions of the supreme court, 1801-15. He was appointed chief justice of the circuit court of the District of Columbia by President Jefferson, Feb. 24, 1806, and continued at the head of the court till 1855. It is recorded that out of all his decisions only two were overruled by the U.S. supreme court. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Antiquarian Society. Harvard gave him the degree of LL.D. in 1829. He published in six volumes the reports of the circuit court of the district, 1801-41, and also nine volumes of the reports of the U.S. supreme court. He prepared a code of laws for the District of Columbia and published a memoir of John Adams in 1827.1

Jedburgh. - The Late Ex-Bailie Craw.
The remains of Mr John Craw, who died in Edinburgh last week, were interred in Castlewood Cemetery, Jedburgh, on Saturday. Deceased. who was a native of Langton, Berwickshire, and was bred to the grocery and spirit trade, came to Jedburgh in 1846, where he carried on a successful business for a period of thirty years. During his residence in Jedburgh he took a fair share in public business. He was for a number of years a member of the Town Council, and for some time held the office of bailie. He was chairman of the Union Board, and a member of both the Burgh and Landward School Boards. He was thrice married, and through his second wife got the life-rent of Lanton Tower, in virtue of which he became a Commissioner of Supply of Roxburghshire. His only son, Dr John Craw, joined the navy, and died at Malta. Mr Craw was a kindly-hearted, genial, and sociable gentleman. Glasgow Herald, 25 January 1897.4,2
