Rev. Edgar Laing Heermance was born on 30 April 1833.1 He was the son of Rev. Henry Heermance and Catharine Laing.1 Rev. Edgar Laing Heermance graduated in 1858 from Yale and from the New Haven Theological Seminary in 1861. He becam pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church at Castleton, Rensselaer County, New York (1861-69). He then lived in New Haven and in 1874 he settled in the ministry at White Plains, New York.1 He married Agnes Woolsey, daughter of Theodore Dwight Woolsey and Elizabeth Martha Salisbury, on 14 May 1863.1
