Rev. John Jeffrey Johnstone Ph.D.1

     Rev. John Jeffrey Johnstone Ph.D. was born circa 1850 in Scotland. He married secondly Gwendoline Russell, daughter of General Sir Edward Lechmere Graves Russell K.C.S.I. and Alice Sewell, in America in the spring of 1916. Rev. John Jeffrey Johnstone Ph.D. died on 30 March 1929 in Bath, Somerset.2

The Rev. Jeffrey Johnson was a well-known a Presbyterian minister, who was formerly pastor of Huntingdon, in the United States. He was educated at Glasgow University, and held pastorates at Forest Hill, and later at St Leonards. He then went for a special course of study at the University of Jena and, taking the degree of doctor of philosophy, and in about 1904 accepted the call of the American church at Huntingdon, Long Island, a famous church dating from 1648. His ministry in America lasted until 1920 when he resigned because of ill health and returned to England and settled in Bath. There he took great interest in philanthropy, particularly in a local tenement housing scheme.

Samuel Cooper Johonnot1

     Samuel Cooper Johonnot was baptised on 13 March 1768.2 He was the son of Gabriel Johonnot and Judith Cooper.1 He was sent abroad for schooling under the care of John Adams and later Benjamin Franklin. Returning home several years later, he graduated from Harvard in 1783, practiced law in Portland, Maine, and became U.S. Consul at Demerara.3 Samuel Cooper Johonnot died in 1806 in Demerara, British Guiana.3
