Dr. Francis Nathaniel Burton Bowen was born on 22 August 1822 in Quebec, Canada.4 He was the son of Hon. Edward Bowen and Eliza Davidson.2,3 He entered military service as an assistant surgeon in the Coldstream Guards on 23 December 1854 having been antedated from 11 May 1855. Posted as surgeon (local rank) Royal Hibernian School, 31 May 1859. Assistant surgeon on staff and placed on half pay 2 December 1859.4 Dr. Francis Nathaniel Burton Bowen married Constantia Caroline Sewell, daughter of Robert Shore Milnes Sewell and Louisa Janet Smith, on 8 January 1861 in The Vicarage, Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire.5 Dr. Francis Nathaniel Burton Bowen and Constantia Caroline Sewellappear in the 1861 census at 5 South Park Villas, Ilford, Essex. Despite his being on half pay they had two house servants. Dr. Francis Nathaniel Burton Bowen died on 29 October 1868 in London at the age of 46

He studied in Edinburgh, and took the degree of M.B. there in 1854, having in the previous year obtained the license of the Glasgow Faculty. He entered the army and served as assistant surgeon in the Coldstream Guards, and afterwards as surgeon in the Military School in Dublin. He left the army in 1862 and settled in London, residing in Upper Berkeley Street. He assisted Mr. Spencer Wells in his private practice for some years, and published some interesting papers in 1866, on "Cancer of the Peritoneum," and on "Fatty Degeneration of the Walls of Ovarian Cysts." He suffered from chronic disease of the liver, and died rather suddenly on October 29th, 1868, aged 46. Proceedings of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London.4
