Very Rev. James Webber. A great-grandson of Charles II.3 He was born on 4 May 1772 in Chichester, Sussex.4 He was the son of Rev. William Webber and Anne Smith.1,2 Very Rev. James Webber was baptised on 8 May 1772 at St. Pancras', Arlington, Sussex.4 On 9 September 1783 admitted to Westminster School, from which he proceeded to Christ Church, Oxford, in October, 1789. He graduated B.A. on the 31st May, 1791, M.A. on the 6th April, 1796, B.D. on the 16th May, 1807, and D.D. on the 14th May, 1827. At Christ Church he became tutor and censor, and was presented to the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, Oxford, 25th January, 1803. On 28th
June, 1810, he was presented to the church of Torrington and the chapel of St. Giles in the county of Devonat a stipend of £34 a year, but he was to pay the curate of St. Giles. He was appointed chaplain to Lord Robert Fitzgerald's Embassy at Copenhagen 1795, prebendary of York 1812, and vicar of Sutton-in-the-Forest 1812, chaplain House of Commons 1812, rector of Kirkham, Lancashire, 1813, sub-dean Westminster, prebendary 1816, rector of St. Margaret's, Westminster, 1827-35, dean of Ripon from 1828 until his death.1,5 He married Caroline Frances Fynes-Clinton, daughter of Rev. Charles Fynes-Clinton, on 13 September 1813 in Cromwell, Nottingham.6,7 Very Rev. James Webber died on 3 September 1847 in Ripon, Yorkshire, at the age of 75.1,6 He was buried on 10 September 1847 in within the altar rails, Ripon,, without monument or inscription of any kind.
Fishwick describes him as being extremely short in stature, and was of sharp, active habits, and in manner somewhat hasty.8
